Tile vs Hardwood Flooring

I get this question almost every time we build a room addition or remodel an existing  house in San Antonio.  Which is better?  Hardwood flooring or Ceramic tile?  Rhino Design Build has the answer.

Well, it all depends on your family lifestyle.  While both offer an upgraded look and better resale value as opposed to carpet or vinyl flooring, the answer isn’t easy.

A few questions:
Do you have children?  If so, ceramic tile is the answer.  Spills are easier to clean and usually won’t leave a stain.  Make sure the grout is sealed!!  Very important!  I install a lot of Engineered Hardwood Flooring here in San Antonio. It has a scratch resistant surface and a 25 year warranty.  A little tip:  when buying hardwood flooring, you can save a bunch of money if you order it online.  Most stores in your area buy it the very same way, except they have overhead to pay for and pass that cost along to you.  By ordering online, you can have the material shipped directly to you in a matter of days.  Just calculate how much flooring you will need and order.  Simple and easy.  This is where we order all of our flooring: Amazon Flooring Online.

Do you entertain often?  Again, ceramic tile hold up better to accidental spills.  Wood floors can be scuffed or scratched with high heels or table movements.

What is your budget?  Ceramic tile is a little more cost effective than actual hard wood or engineered wood.  Although, you can spend a pretty penny if you start getting into Travertine, Marble, or other stone material but is sure does look nice. Again, by ordering tile online, you can save a ton of money by cutting out the middle man from your local stores.  Travertine is a very popular and can be found online a lot cheaper than in your local stores.  Here is a link to find some very affordable flooring:  Travertine.

A reasonable price for ceramic tile labor is $2.00 per square foot, but can be more if you want a pattern (diamond patter, brick patter, etc).  Ceramic tile itself (material) can start as low as $.49 per square foot, but BE CAREFUL!!!!  Sometimes it is a thinner tile and can crack easily one the tile is laid.  Buy Flooring Online and Save a Ton of Money. Engineered wood can start as low as $1.99 per square foot, but don’t be fooled by the so called “PRICE BLOWOUT SALES.”  A lot of times, it is a discontinued product or very thin.  You know the old saying:  “you get what you pay for.”  This can be true of these sales.  Wood flooring labor can start at $2.00 per square foot, but can be more if you have a glue down, nail down, floating floor, lots of corners and cuts, etc.

Have I scared you?  Sorry.  There are tons of options to consider.  I want to make sure you spend your dollars wisely.  If you are considering a flooring project or a home remodel near the 78209 area, give us a call and we will make sure you have all the information necessary to make a wise decision.
